Hedgehogs Pre-School

Welcome to the Hedgehogs the Whitehouse Farm Preschool. The Hedgehogs have two rooms; the Dining Room, used for craft, Gross motor activities and lots of baking. The Playroom, this room is used similar to a reception class. The areas include the literacy lodge where the children can practice writing, learning Phonics and the alphabet. The numeracy area to problem solve and develop numeracy skills, the role play area needed to act out real life situations ensuring children are school ready. The small world area to develop skills such as manners and sharing and also the book area to ensure children have a wide vocabulary and a love of books and reading.

The Hedgehogs are getting ready for school, with the emphasis being on learning through play, Each Hedgehog has their own key person who provides a secure base from which the child can branch out and learn confidently.

The key person plans an individual learning programme for each child, based on what they observe, their next step and the individuals child’s interest and on discussion with the child.

Activities are based on the learning areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage and build and extend on the child’s achievements.

There is a mixture of child led and adult led learning and children are given free choice of activities and determine each weeks learning.

The Hedgehogs have permeant access to the outdoors a door from the Dining room leads to the gardens which allows the child free flow access between indoor and outdoor play. The main garden is full of open ended resources such as milk crates, guttering and lots of mark making, this encourages the children to problem solve, work together and to explore their creative flow. The secret garden provides the children with lots of sensory experiences; water, sand and construction allowing the children to explore and express themselves.

The Hedgehogs also have access to the Orchard where they help to look after the nursery animals; caring for the chickens and collecting their eggs and looking after the guinea-pigs.

The Hedgehogs learning also includes walks around the village, visiting the local parks, trips out in the nursery minibuses and celebrating lots of festivals. The Hedgehogs also have the opportunity to develop further through weekly forest school sessions- for more information on forest school please view the forest school page.

The Hedgehogs are provided with their very own book bag where they keep their communication book, welcome to the Hedgehogs letter and any correspondence, Hedgehogs are also provided with home learning material which they can share with parents/carers, all of which help the children prepare for the transition to school.

We like to involve parents in nursery life and do this through various events such as stay and play coffee mornings, summer fun days, nativity play and leavers party.
